Candy canes are named after the dance Polka which was popular at the time of the 1860s, at this time 'gris' (pig), a general term for sweets, which is said to have contributed to the name. A candy cane is rarely shaped like a pig, however, the rod can often have a hook at the single end To be more easily hung in a Christmas tree and then referred to as a candy cane.

It was in the 18th century that the forest workers in the villages around Mora began carving wooden horses in log cabins in the evenings. Much later, in the 1830s, the horses got their characteristic kurbits pattern. They were eventually sold in the villages and travelled with travellers around Sweden.

In 1953, Ahlgren's candy factory in Gävle decided to start making marshmallows. The result was not at all as planned, instead, it became small foam candy pieces that in shape resembled a car. The cars tasted fantastically good and it was decided not to change anything.
